Biography

Maria CoCo Villalobos

Singer/Songwriter/Percussionist

Maria CoCo Villalobos was born in Tijuana, Baja California in the beautiful country of Mexico.  She grew up listening to Mexican musical icons like Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, and Javier Solis. Her biggest musical influence though, was her mother who taught her how to sing and play the guitar. In fact, she comes from a musically talented family. Her mother, grandmother and also her great grandfather were all in mariachi. She started singing at a very early age and to this day, with more than 25 years of experience in the music business, continues to entertain people of all ages.

CoCo and her family immigrated to Los Angeles, California when she was 11 years old. A few years later, her musical career began when she and her brothers formed a musical group. She was the drummer and then became the lead singer. She went on to play with other bands and developed her musical talent on a percussion instrument called Timbales. Currently, CoCo continues to perform with her band at various local venues in pursue of her love and passion for Latin music.

CoCo began exploring yet another field of her beloved musical passion: Songwriting.

But it wasn’t until 1996 that her writing talent really developed. In the year 2000, she recorded her first CD of original music titled “Hoy Como Ayer”.

In late 2004, a very famous Mexican norteño band called Conjunto Primavera, recorded one of Coco’s songs “Hoy Como Ayer”. Just one week after the release date, the title track soared directly to the No.1 position simultaneously on the radio charts of the leading trade publications: Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, No.1 Regional Mexican Airplay and Radio and Records Regional Mexican Charts. The song “Hoy Como Ayer” also received multiple nominations for Premios Lo Nuestro, The Grammy, and The Latin Grammy in the Mexican Regional categories.

On April 7th 2006, Maria CoCo Villalobos received the prestigious BMI award for writing one of the 50 most popular and played songs of 2005.
